This Week’s “Under the Coverage” Podcast Tackles Topic for Young Adults: When to Move off their Parents’ Health Plan
“I’m 23 and still on my parents’ plan but I have a full-time job that offers health insurance. How do I switch [health plans] when I need to? Do I have to switch doctors?”
Our latest podcast, “Feelin’ 23,” covers this question, which was submitted by one of our dedicated listeners. Guest Carey Krieger, who leads the self-funded account management team at Nova’s parent company, Independent Health, joins “Under the Coverage” once again to help listeners figure out if and when younger adults should change benefit plans.
“Maybe you don't like the coverage you have through your mom or your dad and you can choose to change plans,” Krieger notes. “Your insurance through your new job is also a qualifying event, so you have 30 days from your qualifying event to move to your brand new employer’s insurance.”
Although young adults can remain on their parents’ plan until age 26, as Krieger points out, there are many options and aspects to consider, such as, cost; provider network and whether the young adult is still residing in the same geographic area as his or her parent; prescription coverage; or even the possibility of having a baby.
If you’re between the ages of 18 and 25 or if you’re the parent of a young adult, tune into this week’s episode for more insights.
