'To Have and To Hold: Benefit Summaries and ID Cards'

Podcast discusses value of these health plan documents

BUFFALO, NY, June 14, 2023 – We know health care is a significant expense for most people – one that only seems to continue to rise. If you want lower out-of-pocket costs for health care, getting familiar with your health plan’s benefit summary and ID card can help. During this week’s “Under the Coverage” podcast, Nova client account manager Alicia Campos discusses the value of these materials and walks through three common medical network-related situations.

“In order for you to have the lowest possible out-of-pocket expenses, it is important that you understand what your summary of benefits are as well as your network,” Campos said. “We don’t want you to have to pay more than you have to, especially for services that are supposed to be covered at 100 percent.”

In this episode, “To Have and to Hold: Benefit Summaries and ID Cards,” Campos explains what your summary of benefits and medical ID card can tell you about your coverage, and why it’s important to do your homework when looking for a new provider. She talks through a scenario she and her team often see, where a member thinks a certain specialist is in-network for their plan because their office is listed as in-network on the web. However, sometimes only certain providers within that office are actually in-network. So, when in doubt, she advises people to call the number on their medical insurance ID card to ask questions or verify information about their benefits.

“You know, that's the reason why we are here,” Campos said. “And why we have our customer service team open 12 hours a day just so that you know we’re able to make this health insurance easier for you.”
