Medical Benefits 101

The Importance of Educating Young People on Health Insurance Discussed on Latest Podcast

If there was a course in high school or college to help us understand how medical benefits work and what the terms mean, maybe we’d be better equipped to navigate health care systems. That’s the premise behind Nova’s latest podcast episode, “Medical Benefits 101.”

In this episode of “Under the Coverage,” Nova senior care navigator Kyla Brady talks about the questions she asks providers to avoid unnecessary cost, seeking the most cost-effective treatments for herself, and how she manages conversations around the cost of prescription drugs. Since working in health care, Brady shared she has gained more confidence in choosing her own health benefits and asking questions about her care.

“I didn't know much about the health insurance world until I started this job,” Brady said. “And what I learned in this job was mind blowing to me. I was on my parents’ insurance and I have some health issues now because I didn’t get them looked at sooner and I feel like if I had that confidence to be able to ask those questions a lot sooner, I wouldn’t be in certain positions that I am now.”

Brady wishes young people especially would take the time to care and ask more questions about their health insurance.

“I would love if we took our health insurance, like our health care, and actually prioritized it to younger people, because a lot of younger people don't know,” she said, noting how a class on medical insurance could really be a benefit to younger generations. “Even if it was like half a semester or half a year class in high school, this would have been so helpful.”

In 2022, Nova launched “Under the Coverage,” a podcast featuring people who spend their working days focused on health benefits and health care, to share their insider tips and information they wish every health care consumer knew.
