'Under the Coverage' Podcast Discusses Mental Health Benefits

Is Mental Health Therapy Covered By Insurance?

Your mental health matters – and knowing your benefits is the first step toward getting the right care and support. The latest episode of Nova’s “Under the Coverage” podcast explores how mental health therapy is covered by insurance, what to expect when accessing care through your workplace, and where to find help if you need additional support.

In “Is Mental Health Therapy Covered by Insurance? Understanding Mental Health Benefits,” hosts Sara Fluskey, Nova chief marketing & communications officer, and Jolene Myers, manager, marketing, unpack the complexities of mental health coverage, including therapy benefits, Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and the role of federal parity laws.

“Large group health plans aren’t legally required to cover mental health or substance use treatment,” explains Fluskey. “However, if they do, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires that those benefits be covered at the same level as medical and surgical services, with the same copay, deductible, or coinsurance.”

The episode also highlights key resources for those seeking support outside their health plan, including their employer’s EAP, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988), Mental Health America (mhanational.org), and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org).

Tune in to learn how to navigate your mental health benefits and connect to care when you need it most. While this is the final episode of season four of “Under the Coverage,” you can catch up on our library of more than 60 podcasts anytime.
